Skunk Removal and Foundation Exclusion Under Home Extension — Milton

Job Overview

Location: Milton, Ontario
Structure: Two-story home with an extension
Problem: Skunk activity beneath extension
Service: Skunk removal and exclusion
Visits: 2

Summary

We were contacted regarding wildlife activity beneath a home extension. Inspection confirmed a skunk denning under the structure. Due to seasonal ground conditions in November, timing was coordinated to allow proper trenching and installation of a permanent exclusion system. The issue was resolved over two visits with no further activity reported.

Background / Property Context

The property is a two-story residential home with an extension constructed close to grade. Extensions of this type can create sheltered voids at the foundation edge that are attractive to burrowing wildlife, particularly in colder months.

Customer Concern

The homeowner reported ongoing animal activity beneath the extension and was concerned about potential damage and the possibility of odour issues commonly associated with skunks.

Inspection & Findings

During the initial inspection, our team identified a primary burrowing entrance along the base of the extension. Soil displacement and tunnelling patterns were consistent with skunk activity. No secondary entry points were observed at the time of inspection.

Cause Analysis

Skunks commonly seek sheltered areas under extensions for denning, especially as temperatures drop. The close-to-grade construction and accessible soil perimeter allowed the animal to excavate beneath the structure. Seasonal conditions required scheduling work when the ground was sufficiently soft to complete proper trenching.

Treatment / Removal

A humane, non-lethal eviction process was implemented. A one-way door was installed at the identified burrow entrance to allow the skunk to exit while preventing re-entry. This approach allowed the animal to leave on its own without harm.

Exclusion & Repairs

Once trenching was possible, a perimeter trench was excavated around the accessible sections of the extension. Galvanized steel mesh was securely fastened to the structure and buried approximately one foot down and extended outward to deter future digging. After confirmation of no further activity, the one-way door was removed and the entry point fully sealed.

Outcome & Confirmation

On the follow-up visit, the homeowner reported no continued wildlife activity. The exclusion system was inspected, the temporary door removed, and the trenching finalized. No further issues were reported after completion.

Technician Notes

The work was completed over two visits by our technician, Andrew. The first visit focused on inspection, confirmation of species, and planning the exclusion approach. The second visit confirmed successful eviction, removal of the one-way door, and completion of the permanent barrier. No limitations were encountered during service.
